Baker’s Debut Pre-Season Game
Baker Mayfield: Glad to get first NFL preseason game under my belt
It might only be the preseason, but one game in, Baker Mayfield showed why the Cleveland Browns made him the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s NFL draft.
Replacing starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor late in the first quarter, Mayfield threw two touchdowns in two-plus quarters to help the visiting Browns beat the New York Giants 20-10 on Thursday night.
He hit 11 of 20 passes for 212 yards, didn’t turn the ball over and converted two fourth-down plays with his feet.
“I’m aware that it was the first game, and in that respect, it’s not so bad,” said Mayfield, the Heisman Trophy winner from Oklahoma.
Mayfield said he didn’t experience any jitters during his preseason debut, but did acknowledge that he was glad to have the first game in the books.
“The whole routine was different for me,” Mayfield said. “It was the first time going on the road with a new team, first time in the NFL. Just some new things for me. I wouldn’t say it was anything nerve-racking, but a lot of firsts today that I’m glad I got under my belt so I can get more comfortable as I go down the road.”
